Safe braking requires correct brake bias. Too much bias to the front, your front wheels lock up easy, losing your ability to steer in control. Too much bias to the rear, means your rear wheels lock up which can lead to an extremely dangerous situation where your vehicle spins out.
“My brakes can lock out my wheels so easily” is actually an unsafe metric to gauge your brake system by. I’ve seen quite a few people install larger piston front calipers and larger rotors because front brakes “do most of the braking” and claim they’re stopping faster. Locking out wheels means there’s no traction, which is counterproductive in making a vehicle stop.
A properly engineered brake system takes into account static and dynamic load on front and rear axles. OE manufacturers typically do a good job designing brake bias per vehicle model, so we use this as our baseline. Keeping factory brake bias allows ABS systems to function normally. This is why we require a proportioning valve to be installed if you’ve deleted your OE LSPV.
Developing rear brakes also allows us to solve another problem on the Land Cruiser platform, the unreliable parking brake. We’ve implemented Wilwood’s Electronic Parking Brake into our system to replace that finicky drum and shoe system from factory. These electronic calipers provide an extreme amount of clamping force on your rotors not achievable through a cable and lever system so you can park comfortably on that sloped driveway or road side. -
18” wheels recommended but will clear some 17” wheels that have a high clearance barrel design but must run a high offset wheel(-38).
Example: 17” fifteen52 Analog HD wheels clear with roughly 5mm clearance between barrel and rear EPB caliper(0 offset with 1.5” spacer) -
Wilwood is a globally recognized manufacturer of performance brake products with many brake pad manufacturers like Hawk, EBC, Porterfield, and many others having multiple options for Wilwood calipers. Wilwood has an expansive dealer network around the world and components are often readily available at local warehouses.

Adding hydroboost to your brake system can significantly increase stopping power by increasing force multiplication upstream of master cylinder, increasing line pressure, and greatly improving clamping force between your brake pads and brake rotors. Unfortunately you’re still limited by what the factory OE brake components can handle. Increasing the clamping force introduces considerable amounts of heat that your small pads and rotors can handle and brake fade now comes on much earlier.
Limitation is that factory calipers don’t have many pad compound options that can handle these higher temperatures. Some OE replacement pads may even lose nearly half of it’s friction coefficient when brake temperatures surpass the compounds effective range.
Our big brake system is developed from the ground up, no added stress on your brake line components, and no loss of power steering efficiency from using hydraulic pressure from power steering.
Wilwood is supported by many brake pad manufacturers so many compounds are available to choose from. We’ve taken the steps to choose a great baseline with our recommended pads, but feel free to choose what suits you best! -
Technically yes, but we may not recommend it. Mostly there’s no need, as we spec’d everything to work as a system we were able to maximize what we can get out of braking performance. Anything more would just lock up brakes, and that goes against braking performance. No traction, no braking.

Due to the EPB caliper having a large actuator, it requires careful placement making sure it doesn’t interfere with any other components.
For 99% of 80 series owners, you will mount it roughly in the 3 o’clock position for L/H side and roughly 9 o’clock position for R/H side(both pointing towards the rear of the vehicle).
For the very few, though becoming more common, that might have heavily modified rear suspension such as moving the shocks or installing coil-overs rearward of the axle, or maybe those that may have installed an aftermarket anti-sway bar that may take up that location, you are given the ability to clock the EPB caliper wherever suits your needs. Keep in mind, in the upwards 12 o’clock positions the caliper would interfere with factory bump stops. -
